Juvederm®, Perlane® and Restylane® are stabilized forms of hyaluronic acid used in the correction of lines, wrinkles, and folds of the facial skin. These proven non-allergenic, natural cosmetic dermal fillers are used for cosmetic purposes to restore volume and fullness to the skin, thereby improving its appearance. Injectable fillers may also be used to enhance the appearance of the lips and some types of scars.

How are fillers used?

The filler is injected through an ultra fine needle or blunt cannula beneath the surface of the skin, under the line or wrinkle, where it plumps and smoothes out the skin depression. The filler restores volume and fullness to the skin, thereby "softening" and improving its appearance. In some cases, the filler is placed deeper into facial fat pads that have lost volume, helping restoring more youthful contours to the face. Injecting fillers requires an expert knowledge of facial anatomy and the structure of the skin, to ensure that volume is enhanced in the correct areas. As dermatology specialists we are ideally suited to helping you achieve a great result.

Do filler injections hurt?

At the Skin Surgery Centre, your comfort is paramount to us. We use a variety of methods to help minimise any discomfort depending on the location and type of filler being used, such as using blunt tipped cannulas, using filler with local anaesthetic mixed with it, using topical anaesthetic and using local anaesthetic nerve blocks. In our experience, most people find fillers to be quite comfortable when these techniques are used.

Are filler injections safe?

When performed by an expert, filler injections have a very good safety record. There is a small risk of bruising, swelling or redness at the site of injections which usually subside over a few days. Very rarely there is a risk of a blueish discolouration to the skin, palpable lumps or bumps, allergic reactions, damage to deeper structures such as nerves and breakdown of the skin leading to scarring.

How many treatments will I need?

The duration of a filler treatments, depends on a number of factors including the type of filler, the location and how quickly your body dissolves the material. Most patients will experience a noticeable improvement for 9-12 months after filler application, before it gradually wears off.
