Botox®, (onabotulinumtoxin A) is a substance that acts to block the signals from nerves to muscles. When it is injected very precisely, using an ultra fine needle, into specific locations on the face, Botox® can relax targeted facial muscles softening unwanted lines and wrinkles. The facial muscles that are not treated with Botox® contract in a normal fashion, allowing for normal facial movement and expression.
Botox®, may also be used to block the signal from nerves to sweat glands in patients with excessive sweat production. This generally decreases sweat production in troublesome areas such as the axillae (underarms) and palms.
Botox is commonly used to soften frown lines, crows feet and forehead wrinkles. It is also useful for a number of other areas such as upper lip wrinkles.
Botox is injected using an extremely sharp and fine needle. We have a number of techniques to minimise any sensation from the injections, and most people find the procedure to be very comfortable in our hands.
Botox generally lasts for 4-9 months, so regular treatments are required.
Botox is a safe treatment with virtually no downtime. In most cases, you can resume your normal daily activities immediately.
Immediately following your treatment, you may experience some mild redness and swelling at the injections sites which subsides after a few hours. Rarely, you may experience a bruise which will fade over a few days.
Minimal aftercare is needed. You should avoid rubbing or massaging the treated areas, and should avoid any strenuous exercise or activity.
